Cosmetic Dental Makeovers

Young people today have watched movie stars and celebrities have instant cosmetic makeovers. TV programs give the impression that it is easy to go to a dentist and get a fabulous new smile. People talk about tooth veneers to change the shape, character, and color of teeth in a matter of one or two visits. People who think they inherited bad teeth imagine that a beautiful smile can be purchased like a new outfit for their wardrobe.

Dentists want you to take pride in your teeth. Everyone feels better when their teeth are whiter and their smile is brighter. The problem is that while cosmetic dental makeovers change the shape and color of a smile, they do nothing to address the cause of the problems that disfigured the original teeth, the attack of dental disease. If dental disease caused your problems in the first place, unless you work to change the conditions in your mouth, this disease will continue to attack your teeth, around the margins where false crowns join natural roots, after your makeover.

Individuals with new smiles can find themselves battling receding gums, cavities under the crowns, sensitive teeth, root decay, the need for repairs, and worse. Dental disease may be delayed for a year or two, but a crown, bleaching, or a makeover will not end it. Some people are dismayed to find their makeover treatments need repair after just a couple of years. Only an effective program to change the bacteria in your mouth will keep your teeth healthy and safe for years, possibly forever.

The oral care industry blossomed in the early 1990s and flooded the market with new toothpastes, breath fresheners, stain-removal systems, and finally, whitening products. People—especially teens and young adults—from all walks of life now want to improve the look of their teeth. No longer are white teeth just for movie stars. People without dental insurance think that the over-the-counter products in drugstores will give them a chance to improve and brighten their smiles. There appear to be many choices to whiten your teeth, at every price level.

The public’s interest has generated great profits for the major oral care companies over the past twenty years. Sales of whitening products have increased each year, and they doubled between 2000 and 2006. Despite the huge growth in sales, few studies have been done to evaluate the safety of bleaching, especially for the younger teeth of teens or small children. In fact, the only negative study results appear to have been generated in countries outside the United States, or they were published before the oral care industry began to boom.

Marketing campaigns and an overwhelming selection of new products confuse the public. There is a big difference between healthy white teeth and overbleached ones. For many, the interest in whitening teeth has evolved into a near obsession beyond the boundaries of common sense. Recent articles in the Journal of Pediatric Dentistry talk of mothers who are bleaching baby teeth.2 In one study, many children—some as young as ten—wore tooth whitener strips to school each morning.
